Living With Boundaries Leads to Health

Boundaries abound wherever our eyes land, causing an immunity to their existence. We conveniently forget the parameters placed upon our natural world emphasizing the necessity of healthy boundaries. Gravity is a firm reminder that we were created to walk the earth not to soar as an eagle in the sky. The limits placed upon the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the air are life sustaining. Even our days and nights and seasons are governed by natural laws set in place for the benefit of human life. The land and sea have boundaries that when they are breached can cause devastation. These seem so obvious that they can be taken for granted, and we can be neglectful to recognize the necessity of their presence. Consequently, we are prone to do the same in our personal lives. We ignore our own need for healthy boundaries that lead to our own well-being.

For if natural law boundaries were created with thought and consideration for life, could we not also conclude that our Creator set these in place as an example of the necessity of boundaries for us, His created? Since, the Creator of all that exists exemplified the power and necessity of boundaries, then we should do likewise! Boundaries are set with the realization that we all have limits as much as we’d like to argue to the contrary. Much like the natural world---if we defy the essential parameters, it will lead to harm and destruction. Maybe we tempt fate by attempting to live limitless because we have missed the gift that the presence of a boundary offers. They give much needed margin that all of us deeply desire. We may have buried the need, but it is there, nonetheless. As we set critical boundaries, we are simultaneously uncovering our path to more margin. Margin is the space where we have the freedom to create, play, celebrate, adventure, dream, be, rest, regroup, and live. It is our lifeline to abundance, fulfillment, and joy!

Go ahead! Let’s set a boundary, and another, and then another until it becomes second nature, and we are reaping the benefits of life lived with both limits and margin!
